| In Accessory of Detachment,
I looked at headphones as a cultural icon for detachment, a tool for both physically
distancing oneself from surroundings, and a way of advertising that disengagement
to others. I wore iPod headphones that were snipped, wires uselessly dangling,
everywhere for a week - to class and meetings, on the bus. A common comment was that,
despite that fact that others knew I could hear them perfectly fine, just the
sight of me with head phones on made them feel as if I really didn't care what
they were saying. |
